We know, this is not ground-breaking news. Movie popcorn is the worst for you, but who doesn’t like to enjoy popcorn at the movies – probably very few people.
The average small movie popcorn without butter is around 200 – 350 calories with anywhere from 10 to 30 grams of fat. Medium is around 400-700 calories with 34+ grams of fat. Large is well over 1000 calories and the fat is off the charts. The “butter” is partially-hydrogenated soybean oil that’s been colored and flavored (source: thedailymeal.com).
Tip: pack your own in containers and bring it in a large tote. There are many healthier popcorn brands to choose from if you don’t want to pop your own at home. We love Skinny Pop Butter (it tastes really close to movie theater popcorn) – non-GMO + no artificial ingredients (we recognize all 7 ingredients). A 3 1/2 cup serving (great portion) is only 140 calories, with 8 grams of fat + only 1 gram of saturated fat. Buy a couple of bags the next time you are at the store and save for your next movie outing. We pack a baggie for each family member and bring water.
Trust us, you’ll feel better after the movie (not to mention your wallet with thank you)!
